New York, Je t'aime

Like the compendium of vignettes in the newly released film, New York, I love you, my eating activities on my weekend back in my beloved town was precisely like that: a little bit downtown and a little bit of uptown.

Eric and I started in Tribeca, the old high school ‘hood– walking past Terry’s where I used to buy a turkey, brie, and avocado on a french baguette and devour it down the end of the street at Battery Park. I had not had one since graduation, and I am unsure whether my constant praises of it is biased by nostalgia or whether it was actually a blissful polygamous marriage of rich, milky cheese,  generous heapings of select deli cuts,  and crispy fresh bread.

Very soon, we arrived at the World Financial Center, where the 17 restaurants located in the building congregated under the palm trees in the Winter Garden for what was the, “EAT:  World Financial Center Restaurant Showcase.” It was too corporate, franchise-y (Au Bon Pain and Godiva,) and the food was forgettable if not for the fact that they were very, very photogenic (see gallery.) Financier Patisserie is still great, but the pastry scene in New York pales in comparison to Paris or Tokyo. After unintentionally starving the entire morning, I was expecting a food rager, but encountered what was like an awkward gathering with chips and dips. And no booze. We left very quickly after that.

UWS Shake Shack

The gastro-tour kicks it up several levels of delicious as we continued onto Bouley Market (a celebrity chef venture– perfect, yet simple prosciutto sandwich,) and then to Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack on Columbus and 77th, West siiiiiiide.

Just as it is common knowledge as to what He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and The Artist Formerly Known As represents, New Yorkers acknowledge that The Shake Shack is actually short-hand for, “squishy, buttery potato buns, sun-ripened tomatoes, and flavor-intensive bovine drippings frolicking across your taste buds.”

I lacked the strength of will during my last visit to try the infamous SHACK STACK, but came prepared for the artery-exploding challenge this time. I’ll let the official website describe its glory to you: “Cheeseburger and ‘shroom burger (crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheese) topped with lettuce, tomato, and Shack sauce.” (Before-visuals in gallery) I’ll also let the following picture describe it:

Then, to ward off the negative side-effects of overbearing amounts of fat and sodium (what makes food oh-so-tasty!) we walked the 26+ blocks to Aangan, an Indian restaurant that has an unofficial BYOB policy. This means pairing a sweet, overwhelmingly smooth and honey-flavored Riesling (Washington, 2008) with a Mulligatawny Soup (lentil soup– no expertise on this, but Eric claims that it is “one of the best Mulligatawny soup I’ve had,”) Murgh Aangan (“Boneless pieces of chicken simmered in a tangy tomato sauce & served with lemon rice,”) Saag Ghosht (“Goat meat cooked with spinach puree & Indian spices,”) and garlic naan fresh out of the oven. Chicken was unfortunately dry, but overall, Aangan had a cozy atmosphere, attentive and accommodating service (the server brought out a bucket of ice water for the wine,) and is conveniently next to the 1 train at 103rd.
